6 characteristics of knitted fabrics
1. Elastic and bouncy. Because knit fabric is made up of a series of loops, it is incredibly stretchy, stretching both width and length. This fabric type is suitable for zipper-free, form-fitting garments. The texture of knitted fabric is also flexible and structureless, so it can conform to most shapes and drape or stretch over them.
2. Anti-wrinkle. Due to the stretchiness of knitted fabric, it is very wrinkle-resistant - if you ball it up in your hands and let it go, the material should spring back to its original shape.
3. Soft. Most knitted fabrics are soft to the touch. If it is a tight knit, it will feel smoother to the touch; if it is a loose knit, it will feel lumpy or wrinkled due to the ribbing.
4. Easy to maintain. Knit fabrics don't require special care like hand washing and can be easily machine washed. This fabric type does not require ironing as it is usually wrinkle-resistant.
5. Easily damaged. Knitted fabrics are not as durable as woven fabrics and will eventually start to stretch or pill after wearing.
6. Difficult to sew. Because of its stretch, knitted fabrics are more difficult to sew (either by hand or on a sewing machine) than non-elastic fabrics, as it can be challenging to sew straight lines without creases and creases.
