Common types of woven fabrics include:

1. Corduroy: Corduroy is a twill weave in which threads are woven together in diagonal lines with thick vertical ribbing. Thick, durable, ribbed and comfortable, corduroy has the unique ability to dress well and be comfortable at the same time.
2. Denim: Denim is a twill weave in which the weft yarn is usually woven under two or three warp yarns; the warp yarns are usually dyed indigo, while the weft yarns are left undyed, giving the denim its blue appearance.
3. Flannel: This loosely woven twill or plain weave is usually brushed on one or both sides (called "brushing") to enhance the fine fibers and give it a softer feel. Learn more about flannel in our full guide.
4. Chiffon: Chiffon is a plain weave fabric that is light, breathable and transparent. Sheer fabrics can be woven from a variety of textile types, both synthetic and natural, such as silk, nylon, rayon or polyester.
5. Muslin: Muslin is a loosely woven cotton fabric. It is made using a plain weave technique, which means that a single weft yarn alternates above and below a single warp yarn. Muslin is known as the material used in fashion prototypes to test patterns before cutting and sewing the final product.
6. Buckram: Buckram is a plain weave that can be loosely woven or tightly woven. Stiff, rough fabrics are most commonly used on the inside of baseball caps.
7. Cheesecloth: Cheesecloth is a flat weave fabric that chefs use as a tool for making cheese. The loose weave of the fabric allows liquids to pass through it easily.
8. Poplin: Poplin fabric is a plain weave fabric with very fine warp and thick weft. The fabric is also very lightweight, with a light, breathable drape.
9. Chambray: Chambray is a plain weave fabric in which the warp yarns are usually dyed indigo and the weft yarns are left undyed, giving it a denim-like blue appearance.
10. Velvet: Velvet is made on a special loom called a double cloth, which produces two pieces of velvet at the same time. This luxurious fabric can be woven in any weave construction (plain, satin or twill) with an additional set of warp threads that are cut for a soft feel.
11. Taffeta: Taffeta is made using a plain weave technique in which a single weft thread passes through a single warp thread, creating a checkerboard pattern. When making taffeta, the threads are twisted as they are woven, which creates the stiffness and structure of the final fabric.
12. Organza: Organza is a lightweight, sheer plain weave fabric originally made from silk. The material can also be made from synthetic fibers, mainly polyester and nylon. Find out more about organza in our full guide.
13. Crepe: This fabric can be woven from any weave construction (plain, satin, or twill). Crepe has a rough, irregular texture due to specially twisted or curled yarns. The materials used to make crepes and the methods used to achieve texture define the different types of crepes.
14. Georgette: Georgette is usually a plain weave woven using tightly twisted s-twist and z-twist yarns that are twisted in opposite directions. These twists create slight folds in the surface of the fabric, giving georgette its signature crinkled effect.
15. Cambric: Cambric is a finely woven plain weave that is flattened at high temperatures to create a smooth finish.
